Product Description

Gold tip WL15 tungsten electrodes with 1.5% lanthanum oxide keep a sharp, focused arc over the widest AC and DC current range. Non-radioactive, no tip migration, available from 1.6mm to 4.0mm in 150mm and 175mm lengths, supplied 10 pcs per box.

Product Overview

WL15 is a lanthanated tungsten electrode identified by its gold tip, containing 1.5% lanthanum oxide. It conducts heat better than thoriated and ceriated grades, holds a stable arc from low amperage up to high current, and does not form a molten oxide pool at the tip. This makes it the most versatile grade for mixed production work where stainless steel, carbon steel and aluminum are welded on the same machine, including orbital pipe welding and CNC automatic welding.

Key Features
  • Gold tip color code matches the tungsten electrode color code chart, making grade control easy in the workshop.
  • 1.5% lanthanum oxide delivers the widest usable AC and DC current range of any rare earth grade.
  • Non-radioactive, requiring no special shipping documents and offering safer storage than thoriated electrodes.
  • No tip migration or splitting; the arc stays focused through repeated thermal cycling.
  • Tight 2.4mm diameter tolerance for accurate clamping in WP9, WP17, WP18 and WP26 TIG torch collets.

Performance Advantages
  • Higher current carrying capacity than 2% thoriated at the same diameter, meaning fewer rod changes on thick plate.
  • Stable arc ignition down to low amperage for thin sheet and tube root passes.
  • Lower burn-off rate, longer service life and lower cost per weld on production lines.
  • Direct replacement for thoriated WT20 without re-parameterising the welding program.
  • Reliable arc transfer on heat exchanger and aerospace tube welding where rework is expensive.
Thoriated vs Lanthanated vs Ceriated

Thoriated WT20 (red tip) offers strong contamination resistance but is radioactive and needs careful disposal. Ceriated WC20 (gray tip) starts easily at low amperage and suits aluminum under 200A. Lanthanated WL15 and WL20 (gold tip) cover the widest AC and DC range and are the recommended general purpose replacement for thoriated in most workshops.

Tungsten Electrode Color Code Chart
Tip Color Grade Typical Use
Green WP Pure Tungsten AC aluminum, sine wave machines
Red WT20 2% Thoriated DC steel and stainless steel
Gray WC20 2% Ceriated DC and AC, thin sheet at low amperage
Gold WL15 / WL20 Lanthanated Wide AC and DC range, general purpose
White WZ8 Zirconiated AC aluminum at high current
Current Range (Amp) Chart
Diameter DC Current (A) AC Current (A)
1.6mm (1/16") 80 – 160 70 – 130
2.4mm (3/32") 160 – 250 140 – 230
3.2mm (1/8") 250 – 400 230 – 350
Sharpening and Grinding Guide
  • Grind the tungsten electrode lengthwise along the rod, never across the wheel face.
  • Use a taper 2 to 2.5 times the diameter with a small flat tip for DC stainless steel work.
  • Keep a dedicated diamond wheel for tungsten only, with no cross contamination from steel.
  • Do not over-sharpen the needle point for high current work; a slight flat tip extends electrode life.
FAQ
Is WL15 gold tip tungsten good for aluminum?

Yes. It runs on AC for aluminum and on DC for steel, which suits shops welding both materials.

Can lanthanated replace thoriated tungsten?

Yes. WL15 replaces 2% thoriated WT20 on DC work with no parameter change and no radioactive handling.

Why does my tungsten electrode split?

Usually caused by dipping the tip into the weld pool, wrong polarity, or grinding across the wheel instead of lengthwise.

Do you supply 4.0mm and 1/8 inch sizes?

Yes. 4.0mm, 1/16", 3/32" and 1/8" are available for bulk order.
